My name is Kayhla Scholte and I’m passionate about improving the lives of others through design. I’m an accessibility nerd who loves bringing accessible designs to life.
Before I started my UI Designer life, I went to the University of Wollongong, where I studied Graphic Design. I graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor of Creative Arts (Graphic Design), with Distinction. This course opened my eyes to the creative world. It geared me with basic design skills, design thinking, the power of good design and critical thinking.
My learning did not stop there. I love learning and challenging my own bias. I have continued to learn about design patterns but have also expanded to processes, concepts and theories of UI/UX design by attending webinars, reading blogs, shadowing my mentor and applying these skills at work.
I’m a big-picture thinker, who can also zoom into the smallest pixel. I enjoy working on products/projects from end-to-end, from ideation all the way through to development and testing.
My Design Values.
Accessibility & inclusivity.
The world is filled with such diversity, and I believe that someone should not be excluded because of their differences. It brings pure joy for me to find solutions that can be enjoyed by a diverse range of users with varying needs and requirements.
Empathy & compassion.
For me, empathy is a way to look at the world from lots of different perspectives — trying to imagine myself in the shoes of other humans, with their history, values, and perceptions. It is important to me to practice empathy by looking at design solutions through the eyes of the users as much as possible.
Solving the core problem.
Why are we building this project? Who are we building this for? What are the user pains and gains? How are we going to solve this problem? These are the most fascinating questions.
Continue to learn.
The first solution is most likely not the best solution. For me, this was tough at the beginning of my professional career. Now, I love the challenge of incorporating feedback and criticism and iterate my designs and processes. This allows me to reframe or change my designs in order to create a better experience and product.
Communication & collaboration.
Teamwork makes the dream work! You will hear me say this a lot. For me, communication and collaboration are essential elements to design. It’s all about being able to share ideas and thinking, hear feedback, explore solutions, and incorporate the needs and expertise of everyone involved in the project.
Attention to detail.
Notice the small stuff. For me, by giving attention to every detail we are able to balance the customer needs and business goals. This allows us to deliver the best experince for everyone.
